Position: Executive Director

Job Type: Full Time

Start Date: Negotiable; Position available starting mid-June 2017

Location: Most work will take place at the IHC Office at 912 W. Lake St in Chicago; occasional daytime and/or overnight travel required throughout Illinois (primarily in Chicago Metro and Springfield) and to Washington D.C.

Position Description: The Executive Director provides strategic organizational leadership in partnership with IHC’s 26- member Board of Directors. The Executive Director maintains the financial stability of the organization, enhances the value to IHC members, and pursues opportunities for growth.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing day-to-day operations including: program development and implementation, staff supervision, volunteer recruitment and management, communications, and general administration.
  • Ensuring the financial performance of the organization through fundraising, budget development, budget management, and financial reporting. IHC’s current annual budget is approximately $500,000.
  • Facilitating quarterly Board of Directors meetings and monthly Executive Committee meetings, including maintaining Board of Directors and Executive Committee records. Assisting with Board recruitment.
  • Facilitating a strategic planning process with the Board of Directors and staff including: plan development, adoption, implementation, and feedback.
  • Directly coordinating IHC’s State Liaison and Legislative Committees. Working with the Director of Programs and Outreach on the Membership and Events Committee. Increasing committee involvement among IHC members.
  • Fostering working relationships throughout the affordable housing industry including governmental agencies, lenders, for-profit and non-profit developers, and community organizations.
  • Maintaining an ongoing relationship with the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) to facilitate strong partnerships and coordination, including the planning and execution of the annual Governor’s Conference on Affordable Housing.
  • Maintaining active partnerships with affordable housing and community development advocacy groups at the local, regional and national level – working together to advance affordable housing policies.
  • Identifying policy issues with critical importance to the IHC membership and working within the IHC Committee structure to address such issues and work toward solutions.
  • Leading and/or partnering on non-partisan legislative campaigns to preserve federal, state, and local resources for the development and preservation of affordable housing.
  • Participating as a member of the Council of Independent State Housing Associations (CISHA).
  • Working with the Director of Programs and Outreach to grow and retain member organizations.
  • Working with the Director of Programs and Outreach to plan and host approximately 12 events annually providing educational and networking opportunities to the IHC membership in both Chicago and Springfield.
  • Developing advocacy and communications strategies that include public speaking, social media, fact sheets, e-newsletters, and IHC website. Working with Director of Programs and Outreach and Office Assistant to implement those strategies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge of affordable housing sector with non-profit, for-profit, and government relationships at local, city, state and national levels
  • Experience with strategic planning, organizational growth and staff management
  • Strong diplomacy, communications and problem-solving skills
  • Strong research, writing and synthesis skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; Experience with Quick Books and Word Press
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Political Science, Business, Communications or a related field
