Who is IHC?
Founded in 2002, the Illinois Housing Council is a membership organization that represents over one hundred and thirty businesses and organizations throughout Illinois — all involved in efforts to:
- build, create, and preserve affordable housing and
- to bring economic development to communities across Illinois.
IHC members consist of for-profit and not-for-profit developers, builders and contractors, financial institutions, architects, title companies, attorneys, and civic organizations. Our members create or preserve affordable housing for every segment of our society that needs access to an affordable home (from homeless veterans and victims of domestic violence to seniors, the disabled, and working people — from those who work for modest wages in manufacturing, construction, or service jobs to those who serve our communities as teachers, policemen and firefighters). IHC members have decades of experience, and are well versed in: a) in the use of the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program, Historic Tax Credits, and the New Market Tax Credit b) the role of the GSEs and FHA, and c). all of HUD’s affordable housing programs.
The Economic Impact of Affordable Housing
In Illinois, affordable housing programs provide over two hundred thousand families access to safe, decent and affordable homes. These programs also have an enormous economic impact on the local economy. It is estimated that the One-Year local impact of building 100 apartments in a typical affordable housing development includes $7.9 million in local income, $827,000 in taxes and other revenue for local governments; and 122 local jobs. The additional, annually recurring impacts includes $2.4 million in local income, $441,000 in taxes and other revenue for local governments; and 30 local jobs. The Illinois Housing Council supports the public investment of these successful and proven programs.
